Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)



The figure above indicates a large malformation of arteries and veins in the left hemisphere. The figure below indicates the large extension of the malformation within the hemisphere.

Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM): These are congenital developmental abnormalities in which the normal capillary bed that exists between the artery and venous circulation fails to develop in one part of the brain. They exist as a mass of thin-walled vessels carrying blood at arterial pressure. These may rupture, causing subarachnoid hemorrhage. AVM's may also cause seizures and headache.
