Neuroanatomy of the Cerebral Cortex

This section covers the structure and topography of the cerebral cortex.

Readings: BCN 15; Read the web section: The Cerebral Hemispheres

Cortical Structure

Paleocortex:Simple layered pattern. Ex: Olfactory (Smell)

Archicortex:Three layered cortex. Ex: Hippocampus

Neocortex:

Mesocortex: Six layers which cover the limbic system

Ectocortex: Six layers over remainder of cerebrum

1. Tangential Layer Axons and Dendrites

2. External Granular Small Pyramidal and Stellate cells

3. External Pyramidal Medium Pyramidal Cells

4. Internal Granular Small stellate cells

5. Internal Pyramidal Medium - Large Pyramidal cells

6. Multiform Layers Multiform, some pyramidal and stellate

Functional Localization of the Cortex

Motor Control:

Classical Motor Area
Secondary Area
Frontal Eye Fields

Sensory Perception:

Primary Sensory Areas
Secondary Association Areas

Major Cortical Pathways

Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus
Arcuate Fasciculus
Transverse Fasciculus
Cingulum
Uncinate Fasciculus
Corpus Callosum
Hippocampal Commissure
Anterior Commisure
